In last week’s Economics Weekly we discussed trends in quarterly earnings for both the S&P 500 and the national income and product account measure of corporate profitability. We also touched on the issue of buybacks for the S&P 500 and how they have surged to record levels over the past year. Following several questions on this issue, in this week's Economics Weekly, we delve a little deeper into the vexing issues of stock repurchases and, in particular, what has been happening at the sector level.
