William Blair Investment Counseling partnered with LPGA golf professional Jamie Fischer to host its fourth annual Women on Course golf event as an opportunity for women to make new connections, build relationships and polish their golf skills.

Held at Conway Farms in Lake Forest, Illinois, on June 26, this year’s theme was “Calling Your Own Shots: Lessons for Golf and Life” and featured LPGA golfers and women executives from the Chicago area who shared their perspectives on business and life.

Keynote speaker was Hall of Famer Pat Bradley who was interviewed by Golf Channel’s pioneering broadcaster Kelly Tilghman via a satellite hookup.

Bradley won 31 LPGA Tour events including six major championships, leading the LPGA Tour in wins in 1983 and 1986. She was the first woman golfer to surpass the $2 million, $3 million and $4 million marks in career earnings. Bradley was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1991.

Bradley told a lunch gathering that visualization and trusting in herself helped her focus on the game and on winning. But one of the best life lessons she learned was from her father: “You can be good in a lot of things but to be great you have to sacrifice,” Bradley said. “Looking back on it that was the greatest advice I was given.”

The event also featured a discussion on geopolitics led by William Blair global economist Olga Bitel and a panel on career and life perspectives from executives and advocates for women in business: Madeleine Condit, founder and CEO of consultancy Madeleine Condit & Associates; Barbara Guthrie, chief public safety officer with Underwriters Laboratories, and; Honey Jacobs Skinner, a retired partner at the law firm Sidley Austin. William Blair client advisor Laura Linger moderated the panel.

The annual event brings together top women executives who host employees and clients of their firms to reinforce networking and business focus in a pleasant golf environment. Attendees had an opportunity to join other executive-level women from the Chicago area for nine holes of golf or a golfing clinic at the practice range with former LPGA players as their instructors.
