Richards Named Restructuring Banker of the Year

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

Geoffrey Richards, the head of William Blair & Company’s special situations and restructuring group, was named the Restructuring Investment Banker of the Year for middle markets by the Global M&A Network. This marks the third time in the past four years that Richards has received this award.

Since the beginning of 2011, Richards has served as the lead financial advisor for seven completed transactions, including Giordano’s chapter 11 reorganization and sale to Victory Park Capital and Origin Capital. The Giordano’s reorganization and sale was named Turnaround of the Year for small-mid markets by Global M&A. Giordano’s is one of the most famous Chicago-style pizza chains, with more than 40 locations in Illinois and Florida.

“Geoff and our entire special situations and restructuring group work tirelessly to achieve the best possible outcome for our clients,” said Brent Gledhill, global head of corporate finance for William Blair. “Given the challenging circumstances and compressed timelines facing our clients, Geoff’s ability to assess the possible solutions as both a banker and an attorney is a tremendous asset that allows our clients to maximize value and, in many case, preserve jobs.”

Richards has 16 years of complex transaction experience in an extensive range of restructuring and distressed mergers and acquisition engagements, both in and outside chapter 11. He has advised public and private companies, private equity sponsors, hedge funds, purchasers of distressed assets and businesses, key secured and unsecured creditors, DIP lenders, and creditors’ committees. Since 2001 Richards has taught corporate restructuring as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University School of Law.
