January 8, 1935

Today marks the 85th anniversary of the founding of William Blair.

The firm was founded on January 8, 1935, when William McCormick Blair and Francis Bonner opened an investment banking firm in Chicago. They sought to help the Midwest rebuild from the Great Depression and restore confidence in financial institutions.

From that humble beginning, the firm has grown beyond its Chicago headquarters to establish offices in London, Frankfurt, Zurich, The Hague, New York, San Francisco, Boston, Baltimore, Atlanta, and Charlotte with more than 1,500 employees globally and annual revenues over $1 billion.

"As the firm heads into the next decade and our 85th year serving clients and communities where we live and work, we are looking ahead to a bright future," said John Ettelson, William Blair president and CEO.

"William Blair continues to deliver exceptional value to clients around the world with a mission to empower colleagues, deliver client success, and engage in our communities," Ettelson added.

William Blair remains active in communities around the world and recently announced the expansion of its community partnership program, adding 11 new partners to its global offices.
