I am in Jakarta, Indonesia, and I have just met representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the central bank, and several companies. During Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) presidency, Indonesia has enacted several reforms, including state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and financial reforms and easing foreign investment [restrictions]. This has helped Indonesia’s external balance, moving from a current account deficit to a current account surplus last year. As Indonesia focuses on developing its downstream sectors, we expect Indonesia to continue to attract foreign investment and export higher-value-added products. Credible policymaking should continue as it heads towards elections next year.
