Initially developed to treat diabetes, GLP-1 medications are now widely used as a remedy for weight loss because they help reduce appetite and promote feelings of fullness. With prescription growth exploding in late 2022 and continuing through 2025, it’s estimated that a mid-single- to low-double-digit percentage of U.S. adults are taking GLP-1s. In Fitness Clubs and GLP-1s: Proprietary Survey Suggests Continued Tailwinds, William Blair’s Sharon Zackfia, CFA, partner, and group head of the consumer sector, outlines several key findings:
- Gym membership increased by 3% after starting a GLP-1 medication
- Nearly three-quarters (72%) reported exercising more often
- Greater energy, improved mobility, and increased motivation after weight loss were key drivers of higher activity levels
With obesity representing a larger addressable market than diabetes, the expanding use of GLP-1 medications for weight loss may provide a material tailwind for exercise and fitness companies.
